INTRODUCTION
CuteFTP is a GUI-based FTP client, designed with novice FTP user in mind.
The motivation for creating this program was the ease of use of WS_FTP
by John A. Junod and the appealing screens of Netscape and Mosaic. The key
features of CuteFTP are:
* Cute looks :)
* Intuitive user inerface
* Full screen browsing (with 2 configurable display modes)
* Caching of recently visited directories
* Integrated browsing of index files with files descriptions
REQUIREMENTS
CuteFTP requires MS Windows 3.1 or later and a WINSOCK 1.1 or later
network interface library.
It has been tested with Trumpet 2.0b and MS TCP/IP for WFW.
OPERATION
I tried to make CuteFTP as intuitive as I could, so in general just look
through the menus and the status bar prompts.
I will not go over each function in detail here. Instead, I'll mention
some points that might be unclear.
1. CuteFTP can load index files (files with descriptions for directory
contents), extract descriptions and show them in Long Listing mode.
Descriptions are store in cache allong with the actual dir listing.
Index files are expeted to have a filename, containing 'index' in it
(e.g. index.txt, 00_Index, WinIndex) and be in format:
<filename><space or tab><descripiton>
If there are more than one index files in a directory, CuteFTP will
ask you for the one to load.
You can enable/disable auto-loading of index files when changing to
a new directory (Toolbar button or <FTP> menu).
2. CuteFTP has two display modes: Short Listing and Long Listing.
* In Short List mode you see only file names and corresponding
icons in a multi-column list box.
* In Long List mode you see all available details allong with
filenames in a single-column verticaly scrolled list box.
You can show/hide file details through View->Details menu.
3. In the browsing list box you can double-click an entry and CuteFTP
will:
* For directories and links: change curent directory
* For files: download the file
You can also select multiple files and download them clicking the
toolbar Download button (or select Ftp->Download)
4. Options dialog
* Download path: the directory, where all the received files will
be placed.
* Mail address: sent as password in case of anonymous logon
* Logical up-dir: not implemented yet
* Auto-transfer type: CuteFTP will transfer *.txt files as ASCII
and all others using current transfer type.
* Maximize window: create window of maximum size on startup
* Save view settings: CuteFTP will save all the settings for
browser on exit and load them on next startup
LIMITATIONS
1. CuteFTP will only work correctly with UNIX ls-style listings. Most
of the system I know use that format, so it should be ok for now.
I will add support for more systems in the next version.
2. You can only send single files to a remote host. This will also be
fixed soon.
PROJECTED FEATURES
1. Support for more systems
2. Local files browsing
3. Extended session parameters, including PASV and support for
non-standard FTP ports
4. Better documentation and on-line help
5. Some more ideas I didn't put in this version. Top secret :))
And of course, a lot of bug fixes :)
